Logosynthesis® in War: Healing and Hope
My Personal and Professional Journey – Bulonza Jerson
My name is Bulonza Jerson, and I grew up in Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo—a region scarred by war. My entire life, I have been confronted with pain, trauma, failure, fear, physical symptoms, and distressing memories. In 1997, when I was just two years old, my parents fled the AFDL war in the Kabare territory. We hid in the forest to survive, and there I contracted an unknown illness. It paralyzed my left arm and left me with a motor disability that I still live with today.
Growing up with this disability was a real struggle. In our society, I was seen as „useless,“ „incapable,“ „someone who could never amount to anything.“ These words and judgments left deep scars and led to constant, silent suffering. And yet, at the same time, I saw that the people around me were suffering even more than I was: orphaned children, women broken by sexual violence, entire families displaced by war. That is why I founded ON TIME AID in 2017—to help those whom life has deeply wounded.
My Discovery of Logosynthesis®
In 2021, while searching for tools to heal my own pain and better support others, I came across an article online about Logosynthesis®. I found it fascinating, but I didn’t know how I could learn this method in practice. At first, I set it aside.
A few months later, I learned that a training session had been organized in Bukavu by Madame Esther Borra. It felt like a sign. I knew I needed to learn more. I got in touch with her, and then with Willem Lammers, the founder of Logosynthesis®. I shared my desire to be trained—to heal my own trauma, but also to support my community, which has been so severely affected by the war.
Unfortunately, most of the training programs took place in Europe and were too expensive for me. Time passed, but the war only got worse: more deaths, more sexual violence, more injuries, more displacements.
Even doctors, psychologists, social workers, and humanitarian aid workers were overwhelmed and traumatized themselves. At that critical moment, I turned to Willem once again and sincerely asked him to provide us with free training. Without hesitation, he agreed and put us in touch with Madame Sandrine Lécuyer, a Logosynthesis® trainer who kindly agreed to guide us through a five-day online training course in April 2025.
An education that changed my life
Together with doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and humanitarian aid workers, I participated in the Logosynthesis® Basic Seminar to understand the fundamental principles and apply the Logosynthesis® basic method.
We learned through hands-on exercises. It wasn’t just a theoretical course—it was a genuine experience of transformation. For me personally, the specific Logosynthesis® phrases were a revelation. I used them to work through my deep emotional pain, which was rooted in my physical disability. By repeating these phrases with focus and intention, I felt a genuine sense of liberation. The burden inside me began to lift. My subjective sense of stress dropped to zero.
What Has Changed for Me During the Logosynthesis® Seminar
During the five-day seminar with Sandrine Lécuyer, something happened deep within me—something I had never experienced in any other training or therapy session. For the first time, I wasn’t just listening, taking notes, or understanding concepts intellectually. I experienced a genuine emotional and physical transformation in my very being.
I worked specifically on painful memories from my childhood: the moment when, as a small child, I was sick and helpless, hidden in the woods while the war raged all around us…; the shame and rejection I experienced because of my paralyzed arm…; the anger toward life and sometimes even toward God.
Sandrine guided our group through the Logosynthesis® Basic Process with a calm presence and precision to process these specific memories. And then, as I spoke the third sentence—„I take back all my energy that is bound up in this image and bring it to the right place within myself“—I felt a wave of liberation flow through my chest. My body suddenly relaxed. My breath deepened. The tightness I had always felt in my heart dissolved. It was as if a heavy stone had been lifted from within me.
That night, I slept better than I had in months. No nightmares. No physical pain in my neck or shoulders like before. Emotionally, too, something had changed. For years, I had tried to appear strong—for my community, my organization, my team—but inside, I felt small, broken, and worthless. After that session, I began to feel more whole. I no longer saw my story as a curse, but as a path that gave me deep compassion for others. I felt more grounded, more at peace, and even open to joy again—something I had almost forgotten.
Today, when I sit with war victims, women who have been raped, or orphans, I no longer feel overwhelmed. I remain present. I gently support them using the methods Sandrine taught us. I know how to help without taking on their pain myself. This training has not only helped me professionally—it has changed the way I perceive myself. For that, I am deeply grateful.
Today, I continue to heal—and help others heal
Thanks to this training, I feel better equipped to support rape survivors, orphans, and displaced people affected by war—the people we work with at the humanitarian organization ON TIME AID (OTA). Using the 7 Steps of Guided Change that I’ve learned, I now help others recognize and process their inner blockages and take steps toward healing.
Every day, I continue to apply what I’ve learned—to nurture my own mental health and to share with others what has brought me healing. What I’ve experienced, many others go through in silence. But today I know: Healing is possible. And I want to be a bridge to that healing for others.
